Toronto Erotic Arts & Crafts Fair

February 15th, 2010 @ 3:22 pm

Well, my crafts fair cherry has been popped and what more appropriate a venue to lose it than the Toronto Erotic Arts and Crafts Fair. I hadn’t slept properly in the last few weeks just prepping for this show, but it was totally worth it. I had such a great experience being on the vendor side of things, meeting fellow erotic artists and enthusiasts and finally sharing my world with others.

Everyone seemed to be very delighted by the hickey hiders. I’m glad the cheesy product name put a smile on their faces as they reminisced about their high school flings and looking for crappy hickey hiding solutions as sixteen year olds. Several people left the room with a hickey hider around their neck, and I also got a couple of custom orders which was really neat. Next time I will knit more “masculine” colours so that the guys can find a hickey hider for themselves too.

My Lucky Sexy & Pierced Series pins also made their debut at the Fair. It was great hearing customers enthusiastically say, “I want an asshole, please!” or “I like Prince Albert”. We even had a father-daughter team who bought several penis and vagina pins as gifts for friends. That totally made my day!

I was also able to preview some of my artwork that will be at my upcoming solo show at Come As You Are this July. “Suck it” was the biggest hit of all. Porn star Dylan Ryan (who is featured in “Suck it”) stopped by my booth and picked up a print. I love her to bits… hopefully one day we can share the Keyhole stage together during one session.

The Erotic Arts and Crafts Fair was also such a great opportunity for Pretty Poopie to gain more exposure. I was one of the few vendors featured on BlogTO‘s recap of the fair. My “Sex?” and “Threesome?” greeting cards (I’ll take a photo of it soon!) were also mentioned in the Toronto Sun alongside a page-size photo of me trying on a Cinched Tight corset with matching bloomers. There were also many wonderful people who sported my Pretty Poopie pins and took my sticker giveaways to put on their binders, lockers and phones. Thank you so much for helping out a quiet & independent maker of creative crap, guys!

A lot of hard work was put into this show. I also had a lot of help from some really close friends organizing this booth. Special thanks goes out to Ben, Jill and Christine, who punched some assholes and got injured for vaginas (aka. they were my pin pressing assembly line when time was running short and I needed the extra pair of hands). Much love to my friend Melissa Condotta of DesignBox for helping me design a really pretty booth that became a great hit. Most importantly, I also want to thank my husband, Alex for not only being my helper monkey and keeping me company at my booth throughout the entire day, but also for being continually supportive and playing my marketing pimp. You’re awesome!

For those of you who missed out on the Erotic Arts and Crafts Fair, don’t fret… I am going to set up my online store very shortly.

Thank you for a great first crafts fair experience! Can’t wait to do it again next year!
